Ordinances
An ordinance is simply a law of a local government. City councils and county boards pass ordinances to regulate the operations of government and actions of individuals for public benefit. One example of a common ordinance related to land development is a zoning ordinance. A zoning ordinance regulates the operations of government by prescribing rules the zoning commission must follow to evaluate requests. A zoning ordinance regulates the actions of individuals by prohibiting certain types of development in places where the development would harm the community.
